Deny…

I write to you, not because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and because no lie is of the truth. Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son. No one who denies the Son has the Father. Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also. ~ 1 John 2:21-23

When we think about the word “deny” in the teachings of Jesus, most often we think about His saying: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.” (Cf. Matthew 16:24-25; Mark 8:34-35; Luke 9:23-24) Indeed, this is a primary focus of how we abide in Christ and He in us. It is the initial action of our sanctification … to separate ourselves from the world and to set ourselves apart for service unto the Father. As we have been admonished in 1 Peter 14-16: “As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.” (Cf: Leviticus 11:44, 45; 19:2)

But I think there is a greater significance to the word “deny” in the Scriptures as emphasized in our key verse above. The one who denies that Jesus is the Messiah (Christ) is considered a liar and an antichrist. John asserts that to deny Jesus is tantamount to the denial of God the Father. Indeed, the judgment of all people rests upon the acceptance or denial of Jesus.

John 3:16-18 (NIV)

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him. Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.

Romans 14:10-12 (NIV)

You, then, why do you judge your brother or sister? Or why do you treat them with contempt? For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat. It is written: “‘As surely as I live,’ says the Lord,
‘every knee will bow before me; every tongue will acknowledge God.’” (Cf. Isaiah 45:23) So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God.

Philippians 2:9-11 (NIV)

Therefore, God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Dear reader, I pray that you have not denied the Lord Jesus as our Messiah, the Son of the Living God. And I pray that if you claim to know Jesus but deny Him by your actions (Cf. Titus 1:16), you would further examine yourself to see whether you are in the faith. Yes, test yourself. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you – unless, of course, you fail the test? (Cf. 2 Corinthians 13:5) And if you do confess Jesus as Lord to the glory of God the Father, then I pray you and I will deny ourselves, take up our crosses daily, and follow Him in all obedience. For Jesus affirmed, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” (Cf. John 14:15)

Condemn…

Condemn…

For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him. ~ John 3:17

I have read the discourse between Jesus and Nicodemus many times in this chapter of the Gospel of John; and the clarity of what Jesus said … the powerful implication of His words … continue to penetrate my soul. The mission and purpose of the Son of Man … the Messiah of God … the One and Only Son of God … is presented with complete translucence, and we would be wise to meditate upon these truths.

John 3:14-21 (CSB)

“Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in Him may not perish, but have eternal life. For God loved the world in this way: He gave His one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him. Anyone who believes in Him is not condemned, but anyone who does not believe is already condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the one and only Son of God. This is the judgment: Light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than the light because their deeds were evil. For everyone who does not come to the light, so that his deeds may not be exposed. But anyone who lives by the truth comes to the light, so that his works may be shown to be accomplished by God.”

I encourage you to read Numbers 21:4-9, to see the Scripture Jesus referenced with Nicodemus. In this story we see the mercy of God toward those who exercised a simple action of faith to avoid death from the bite of a venomous serpent. Jesus points Nicodemus to Himself and explains that he, too, should believe in Him (the one who would be lifted up on cross) to avoid the penalty of death (condemnation) for rejecting the love and mercy of God. Indeed, this is the message of Jesus and the reason He was hung upon a cross. Those who look to Him … those who believe in His name … are no longer condemned for their rebellion against God. In Jesus, through His blood, atonement has been made. “It is finished.” (John 19:30)

Some of the sweetest words ever spoken were those of Jesus to a woman caught in the act of adultery. The account is found in John 8:1-11 when those who accused her of sin were convicted by their own. Jesus asked her, “Where are your accusers. Has no one condemned you?” She answered, “No one, Lord.” Then Jesus replied, “Neither do I condemn you. Go, and from now on do not sin anymore.” My friend, when you put your faith in Jesus, He will not condemn you; rather, He will set you free! He is the only assurance for eternal life!

In Romans 8:1-4, Paul reminds us: “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so, He condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.”

Paul asked and answered a rhetorical question: “Who then is the one who condemns? No one! Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.” (Romans 8:34) Yes, God sent Jesus to save people from their sins … not to condemn them for their sins. Yet, let us remember that anyone who does not believe in Jesus remains in condemnation and judgment for their sin. Indeed, “If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:8-9)

This is how we know that we belong to the truth and how we set our hearts at rest in His presence: If our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our hearts, and He knows everything. Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God and receive from Him anything we ask, because we keep His commands and do what pleases Him. And this is His command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us. The one who keeps God’s commands lives in Him, and He in them. And this is how we know that He lives in us: We know it by the Spirit He gave us.

Savior…

And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent His Son to be the Savior of the world. ~ 1 John 4:14

There are many nights that I have pondered this verse … praising God for the Apostles who were faithful witnesses of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! And the Beloved John had a special gift of articulating the intensity of all he experienced in the presence of Jesus. John saw the eternal being of Jesus – He who was, and is, and is to come….

That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of Life. The Life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. We proclaim to you that we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. We write this to make your joy complete. (1 John 1:1-4)

The Good News … the Gospel … could not be clearer than what John composed for us. The Father sent His Son to be the Savior of the world! It was His great love that compelled the Father to do so. (John 3:16) Indeed, “This is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.” (1 John 4:10) This is so difficult to understand when we consider ourselves and our sinful nature. But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8)

Savior. The word resounds with joy! There is a reason for hope! Paul reminds us:

At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of His mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by His grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. (Titus 3:3-7)

So, I join with John and proclaim to you – Jesus Our Savior!

He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to Him. Yet He is the image of the invisible God. (Colossians 1:15)

There was nothing in His appearance that we should desire Him. Yet no one ever spoke the way this man does. (John 7:46)

He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain. Yet to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God. (John 1:12)

Like one from whom people hide their faces He was despised, and we held Him in low esteem. Yet God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name that is above every name, at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:9-11)

Surely, He took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered Him punished by God, stricken by Him, and afflicted. Yet for the joy set before Him He endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. (Hebrews 12:2)

But He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on Him, and by His wounds we are healed. Yes, He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness. (1 Peter 2:24)

We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. Yes, Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! (John 1:29)

My friends, we have a perfect Savior! Let us give thanks and praise to Him! Let us proclaim Him to those around us!

Open…

And Elisha prayed, “Open his eyes, Lord, so that he may see.” Then the Lord opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. ~ 2 Kings 6:17

What an incredible experience it must have been for the servant to have the Lord open his eyes to the unseen … to peer into the heavenly realms and encounter spiritual realities hidden from our view. What incredible grace God bestows upon His people … to open our eyes to see those things that elude our natural sight.

In Genesis 21:19, God opened the eyes of Hagar, and she saw a well of water. She went and filled a skin with water to revive her thirsty son. In Numbers 22:31, the Lord opened Balaam’s eyes, and he saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road with his sword drawn. Indeed, there are times when the Lord enables us to see the supernatural in order to reveal with His will and to align us with His purposes. But as I study the Word of God today, my heart has been drawn to and identifies with the Psalmist who wrote: “Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law.” (Psalm 119:18) Yes Lord, “Give me understanding, so that I may keep your law and obey it with all my heart.” (Psalm 119:34)

In Luke 24, we have the story of two disciples who were walking along the road to Emmaus and discussing the crucifixion of Jesus just three days prior. A stranger approached them and began to walk with them; listening to their unfolding of recent events and observing their downcast hearts. Then He said to them: “How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter His glory?” And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning Himself.”

The stranger expounded on the ancient scriptures to explain their prophetic revelations regarding the Messiah. He affirmed to them that Jesus was indeed the Messiah – the Holy One of Israel. And as He lingered to eat a meal with them that evening, Jesus opened their eyes so that they could recognize Him. In astonishment they asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while He talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us? (Luke 24:28-32)

Later that same night, after the two had returned from Emmaus with their amazing news, Jesus appeared to the disciples as they were gathered in conversation. They were startled and afraid at His sudden appearance. Jesus said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.” Then He opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. (Luke 24:44-45)

My friends, most assuredly, the Lord Jesus Himself is our Master Teacher! Our Savior fulfills every word declared through Moses, the Prophets, and His Spirit. (Hebrews 1:1-3) Indeed, the Spirit of Truth guides us into all the Truth. (John 16:13) And the Truth is Jesus Himself – the Word of God! (John 1:1; 14:6; John 17:17) Oh, how I pray that Jesus would open our eyes to see all the Scriptures concerning Himself; give us burning hearts to receive and understand them; and endue us with His power to believe them! Amen.

Come…

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. (Matthew 11:28-29)

Never have there been any kinder, more gentle words than this invitation of our Lord Jesus Christ. There is a deep longing within each of us to hear His voice … calling us to draw close to Him and to surrender every wearisome burden of life. His appeal, “Come to me”, is the heart of the Gospel! Jesus assures us: “Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” And, “All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of Him who sent me.” (John 6:35; 37-38)

Jesus taught, “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day. It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God.’ (Quoting Isaiah 54:13) Therefore, everyone who has heard the Father and learned from Him comes to me.” (John 6:44-45) And Jesus declared, “As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built.” (Luke 6:47-48)

My friends, there is an abundance of grace to be received in His offer to Come! There are benefits to be enjoyed. When we come to Jesus and place our faith in Him, we receive His gifts of salvation and eternal life. Whoever comes to Jesus will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life! (John 8:12) Indeed, Jesus pleads: “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” (John 7:37-38) Jesus is the Way and the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Him!

So, I urge everyone to come to Jesus! He is waiting with open arms to embrace and betroth you! Yes, come to Jesus, and joyfully serve Him in love! One day, Jesus is going to come in His Father’s glory with His angels, and then He will reward each person according to what they have done. Indeed, we will hear that precious word again: “Come!” For the King will say, “Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the Kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.” (Matthew 25:34)

Redeemed…

Since you call on a Father who judges each person’s work impartially, live out your time as foreigners here in reverent fear. For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. (1 Peter 1:17-19)

Is there anything better for believers than the knowledge they have been redeemed? Do we truly understand redemption – the redeeming love of God in Christ? We have been redeemed from the wages of sin and death! We have been redeemed from the power of sin and its empty life! We have been released from the shackles of guilt and the chains of darkness! Indeed, we are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that we may proclaim the praises of Him who called us out of darkness into His marvelous light; who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy. (1 Peter 2:9-10)

Let us understand the significance of the redemption He accomplished! “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a pole.” (Cf. Deuteronomy 21:22-23)He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promised Holy Spirit.” (Galatians 3:13-14) Yes, we who trusted in Jesus, after we heard the word of truth, the gospel of our salvation; in Him, having believed, we were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory! (Ephesians 1:13-14)

Let us understand the necessity of the redemption He accomplished! In Jesus we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of God’s grace! (Ephesians 1:7) For God rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the Kingdom of His Beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. (Colossians 1:13-14) Indeed, we have been freely justified by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. So, let us not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom we have been sealed for the day of redemption. (Ephesians 4:30) Rather, let us praise the One who paid our debt and raised us from the dead!

My friends, do you understand what it means to be redeemed? If so, then by faith, wrap yourself in the white linen that is to be our everlasting garment and give Him all the glory! Yes! Let us worship Christ Jesus, who entered the Most Holy Place with His own blood, and obtained for us eternal redemption! (Hebrews 9:12)

Slumber…

A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest— (Proverbs 6:10)

I find it interesting that a lazy person only asks for a little sleep … a little slumber. Perhaps he would be offended if he were accused of outright laziness. A little is all that is desired. Perhaps he thinks “a little” is easier to conceal…. But let us see the outcome of “a little” over the span of time:

Proverbs 6:6-11 (NIV)

Go to the ant, you lazy person; consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest.How long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you get up from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest— and poverty will come on you like a thief and scarcity like an armed man.

Proverbs 24:30-34 (NIV)

I went past the field of a lazy person, past the vineyard of someone who has no wisdom or discernment. Thorns had come up everywhere, the ground was covered with weeds, and the stone wall was in ruins. I applied my heart to what I observed and learned a lesson from what I saw: A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest— and poverty will come on you like a thief and scarcity like an armed man.

Charles Surgeon observed: “It is by little procrastinations that people ruin their souls! They have no intention of delaying for years. They hope that it will be more convenient for them to seek God in a few months. They will get around to serious matters tomorrow.” And little by little, time eludes their attention. Indeed, life is wasted in small amounts! Opportunities for grace to be encountered are often taken for granted. And in the end, that person comes to spiritual poverty because of a little sleep … a little slumber … along their journey of faith.

As poverty will come to the idle, so ruin will come to those who remain undecided about Jesus. Yes, death will come to the unrepentant; and the unbeliever will miss salvation! For as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment; so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him, Jesus will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation. (Hebrews 9:27-28)

My friends, there will come a solemn day when it will be too late to repent and believe. I urge you to do so today: because the hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, and our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. The night is nearly over; the day is almost here! Therefore, put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of His light. (Romans 13:11-12)

Receive…

So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in Him, rooted and built up in Him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. (Colossians 2:6-7)

To receive is to come into possession of something such as a gift. When you receive someone, you greet and welcome them into your home. In Ephesians 2:8-9, faith is represented as a gift from God. Yes, because of His grace, we receive salvation and eternal life through faith in Christ Jesus. And when we receive Jesus, He comes to dwell within us. As John 14:23 affirms: Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.”

One might ask, “How do I receive the gift of faith?” Well, consider how the earth receives light and warmth from the sun – how the clouds release their rain to water the fields and fill the streams. Everything necessary for life is given without any effort from the recipient. It is simply received as a blessing from God. Likewise, our faith is a gift that only needs acceptance. Indeed, the faith we receive from God is essential for life. For by faith, Jesus becomes a real and precious possession. He becomes our very own! I think about the metaphor Jesus used to describe this abiding union:

John 15:4-5 (NIV)

Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.

Jesus tells us to remain in Him. And this is how we know if we are abiding in Him – we will bear much fruit to the glory of God the Father. If you and I do not bear fruit, then we are failing to abide in Jesus. The Apostle John explains:

1 John 2:3-6 (NIV)

We know that we have come to know Jesus if we keep His commands. Whoever says, “I know Him,” but does not do what He commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. But if anyone obeys His word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in Him: Whoever claims to live in Him must live as Jesus did.

My friends, what we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. (1 Corinthians 2:12) The Father gave us His Son to abide in us through the Spirit. Just as we receive Christ Jesus as Lord and Savior, let us abide in Him and bear much fruit! Amen.

Ashamed…

Ashamed…

When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness. What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death! But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:20-23)

Embarrassment. Humiliation. These words describe our inner feelings when we are ashamed of our actions, character, or relationships. Think of the last time you felt ashamed. Recount what you did or said that caused you embarrassment or humiliation. Did it afflict your conscience with regret or remorse or fill you with inner turmoil? Do you remember the occasion and being ashamed? This is what sin does to us. This is what rebellion and disobedience to the Word of God causes within us. It is the conviction of the Holy Spirit within believers that is meant to bring us to confession and repentance.

When we fail because of our sinful human nature, a believer will feel ashamed. We have displeased God and we know it! A chasm, a separation has occurred and we want restoration. Like King David, we plead with God: “Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity. Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.” (Psalm 51:9-12) We do all this because we have disgraced God and feel ashamed of ourselves.

Yet, there is another aspect to the word “Ashamed”. It has to do with our reluctance or unwillingness to do something because we fear shame, embarrassment, or humiliation. Consider what Jesus said in Luke 9:23-26 in this regard: “Whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when He comes in His glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.” (See Mark 8:34-38) Perhaps, this is why Paul admonished Timothy: “For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline. So, do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me His prisoner. Rather, join with me in suffering for the Gospel, by the power of God. (2 Timothy 1:7-8)

As Peter encouraged: “If you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name.” So, let us join with Paul and declare: “I am not ashamed of the Gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.” (Romans 1:16)

Ambition…

Ambition…

It has always been my ambition to preach the Gospel where Christ was not known, so that I would not be building on someone else’s foundation. Rather, as it is written: “Those who were not told about Him will see, and those who have not heard will understand.” (Romans 15:20-21)

When I ponder the word ambition, I often think of the Apostle Paul and his strong desire to preach the Gospel under all conditions and in all circumstances. His accomplishments through the anointing and power of Jesus Christ leave no question as to his devout determination to fulfill his calling and to achieve an enduring impact on the development and growth of the Church. His initiative and hard work for the Kingdom of God are evident and attested in his inspired writings. (Cf. 2 Corinthians 6:3-10) Truly, Paul is an ideal model for all of us who aspire to fulfill their assignment in the Great Commission. (Cf. Matthew 28:18-20)

I am reminded of principles Paul instructed believers to follow with regard to their walk of faith and their eagerness to love one another. He urged them to do so more and more and taught: “Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your own business and work with your hands, just as we instructed you, so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.” (1 Thessalonians 4:9-12) Indeed, it should be our ambition to live worthy of the Lord Jesus in all things so that our lives are witness as to the power of the Gospel within us.

There is, however, a form of ambition that we must avoid if we intend to be effective witnesses. We are admonished to renounce selfish ambition. It is one of the acts of the flesh. (Galatians 5:20) And Paul was adamant: “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. (Philippians 2:3-4) Yes, our sole aspiration in life should be to love one another as Jesus has loved us. This was His command! But if we harbor selfish ambition in our heart, it is clear such a desire does not come from the wisdom of heaven….

Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic.
