Wealth…

Wealth…

You may say to yourself, “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.” But remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms His covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today. (Deuteronomy 8:17-18)

Wealth can be deceitful because too often we tend to forget who gives us the ability to produce wealth.  King Solomon observed, “Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income. This too is meaningless. As goods increase, so do those who consume them. And what benefit are they to the owners except to feast their eyes on them? (Ecclesiastes 5:10-11) So, I think we should look at wealth from a biblical perspective….

Matthew 19:21-23 (NIV)

Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth. Then Jesus said to His disciples, “Truly I tell you; it is hard for someone who is rich to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. 

Luke 16:10-13 (NIV)

“Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much. So, if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches? And if you have not been trustworthy with someone else’s property, who will give you property of your own? No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”

1 Timothy 6:6-10 (NIV)

But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

Hebrews 13:5 (NIV)

Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” (Citing Deuteronomy 31:8)

But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. Obedience…

Obedience…

So be careful to do what the Lord your God has commanded you; do not turn aside to the right or to the left. Walk in obedience to all that the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live and prosper and prolong your days in the land that you will possess. (Deuteronomy 5:32-33)

To walk in obedience has always been the expectation of our Creator from the beginning. Adam and Eve only had one commandment to keep, but they failed to observe it and brought sin upon mankind. Had they known then what we know now, I believe they might have reconsidered their act of disobedience and the consequences that ensued….

What does the Lord your God ask of you but to fear Him; to walk in obedience to Him; and to serve Him will all of your heart and soul. (Deuteronomy 10:12) And there is great reward for those who keep the commands of God! I encourage you to read all about the blessings God ordained for obedience written in Deuteronomy 28. The desire of God to bless His people with abundant life is quite evident:

Psalm 128:1-4 (NIV)

Blessed are all who fear the Lord, who walk in obedience to Him. You will eat the fruit of your labor; blessings and prosperity will be yours. Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house; your children will be like olive shoots around your table. Yes, this will be the blessing for the man who fears the Lord.

And there are spiritual blessings for obedience! Jesus said to His disciples: “If you love me, keep my commands. And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of Truth.” (John 14:15-17) “Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.” (John 14:21) “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.” (John 14:23) Indeed, Jesus affirmed: “If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in His love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.” (John 15:10-12)

But Samuel replied: “Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams. For rebellion is like the sin of divination, and arrogance like the evil of idolatry. Because you have rejected the Word of the Lord, He has rejected you as king.” ~ 1 Samuel 15:22-23

Goodness…

Goodness…

Then Moses said, “Now show me your glory.” And the Lord said, “I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim my name, the Lord, in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.” (Exodus 33:18-19)

Could we just meditate on the infinite goodness of God for a moment?  Oh, how King David was enthralled with the goodness of the Lord! He experienced and declared of our Great Shepherd: “Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” (Psalm 23:6) His faith expressed: “I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.” (Psalm 27:13) In his heart, David pondered: “What shall I return to the Lord for all His goodness to me?” (Psalm 116:12)

The goodness of God stems from His faithfulness. His faithfulness emanates from His great, unfailing, and everlasting love. Could we just rejoice in the faithful goodness of God for a moment?

Psalm 103:1-5 (NIV)

Praise the Lord, my soul; all my inmost being, praise His holy name. Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all His benefits— who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle….

Could we just begin giving thanks to the Lord for all His goodness? Not just for a moment, but with a continuous song of thanksgiving in our hearts! Indeed, “Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever.” (1 Chronicles 16:34) Yes, my friends, “Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that openly profess His name. And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.” (Hebrews 13:15-16)

Can we now imitate the goodness of God in our own lives? Yes, in view of God’s mercy, can we offer ourselves as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God? Can we be devoted to one another in love? Honor one another above ourselves? Share with the Lord’s people who are in need? Practice hospitality? Live at peace with everyone? (Romans 12)

With this in mind, we constantly pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of His calling, and that by His power He may bring to fruition your every desire for goodness and your every deed prompted by faith. We pray this so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in Him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ. ~ 2 Thessalonians 1:11-12

Faithful…

Faithful…

But it was because the Lord loved you and kept the oath He swore to your ancestors that He brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the land of slavery, from the power of Pharaoh, King of Egypt. Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; He is the faithful God, keeping His covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love Him and keep His commandments.” (Deuteronomy 7:8-9)

All the ways of the Lord are loving and faithful toward those who keep the demands of His covenant. (Psalm 25:10) Yes, He is a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness. (Psalm 86:11) Who is like you, Lord God Almighty? You, Lord, are mighty, and your faithfulness surrounds you. (Psalm 89:8) Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures through all generations. The Lord is trustworthy in all He promises and faithful in all He does. (Psalm 145:13)

Throughout the Old Testament, the testimonies of God’s faithfulness are attested. We see His faithfulness to the promises made to Abraham and his descendants. Testimonies abound in the Word of God as to the faithfulness of God to those who love Him. And I think that is an important point for us to consider. Psalm 18:25 declares: “To the faithful you show yourself faithful, to the blameless you show yourself blameless….”  The implication is that our ability to experience the faithfulness of God appears to be connected to our demonstrated faithfulness toward Him.

Yet, I have found that even if we are faithless, God remains faithful. The great love and faithfulness of God is demonstrated in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8) Indeed, Paul assures us: “God will also keep you firm to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. (1 Corinthians 1:8-9) Likewise, Paul prayed the following: “May God Himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The One who calls you is faithful, and He will do it.” (1 Thessalonians 5:23-24)

My friends, we worship and serve a faithful God who will not let us be tempted beyond what we can bear. (1 Corinthians 10:13) He is faithful to strengthen us and protect us from the evil one. (2 Thessalonians 3:3) And He is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9) I pray that we will praise God for His great faithfulness to us … and thoughtfully consider how to be more faithful to Him – living worthy of our redemption in Christ!

Promise…

Promise…

Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation, and all nations on earth will be blessed through him. For I have chosen him, so that he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing what is right and just, so that the Lord will bring about for Abraham what He has promised him.” (Genesis 18:18-19)

God made a promise to Abraham. It was a declaration or assurance that He would do certain things for him. God assured Abraham saying: “I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you.” (Genesis 17:17) His inheritance of the Promised Land was established, and the journey of his descendants commenced. And in time, when the Israelites had entered and possessed the land, Joshua would attest: “Not one of all the Lord’s good promises to Israel failed; every one of them was fulfilled.” (Joshua 21:45)

When the Ark of the Covenant was returned to Jerusalem, King David offered thanksgiving before the Lord and said: “He remembers His covenant forever, the promise He made, for a thousand generations, the covenant he made with Abraham, the oath he swore to Isaac. He confirmed it to Jacob as a decree, to Israel as an everlasting covenant: “To you I will give the land of Canaan as the portion you will inherit.” (1 Chronicles 16:15-18) Likewise, King Solomon proclaimed: “Lord, the God of Israel, there is no God like you in heaven above or on earth below—you who keep your covenant of love with your servants who continue wholeheartedly in your way. You have kept your promise to your servant David my father; with your mouth you have promised and with your hand you have fulfilled it—as it is today. (1 Kings 8:23-24)

Indeed, God has been faithful to keep His promises to His people throughout all generations! And today, those who love Him have great assurance in the promises of the New Covenant –established and sealed in the blood of Christ Jesus! Yes, from King David, God brought to Israel the Savior Jesus, as He promised! (Acts 13:23) In Him we have the promise of salvation and eternal life. In Him, we receive the promise of the Holy Spirit. In Him, we have the promise that He will never leave us nor forsake us. Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God. (2 Corinthians 7:1) For Jesus promised to return and take us to be with Him forever….

Peace…

Peace…

As I contemplated the horrific and tragic events that occurred over the past week in Israel, I was drawn to Psalm 122 – when King David urged the people to pray for the peace of Jerusalem. He continued and petitioned: “May those who love you be secure. May there be peace within your walls and security within your citadels.” For the sake of my family and friends, I will say, “Peace be within you. For the sake of the house of the Lord our God, I will seek your prosperity. (6-9)

Yet, centuries later, as Jesus approached Jerusalem and saw the city, He wept over it and said, “If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes. The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side. They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognize the time of God’s coming to you.” ~ Luke 19:41-44

As the people of Israel look for peace with their neighbors, there is a deep sorrow within my heart for them … and for all who have a veil over their eyes concerning WHO would bring them true peace.  Paul, too, felt anguish in his heart for the salvation of his people. He noted that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge. (Romans 10:1-2) As John testified about Jesus: “He was in the world, and though the world was made through Him, the world did not recognize Him. He came to that which was His own, but His own did not receive Him. (John 1:10-11)

As we pray for peace to ensue in Israel in the days ahead, let us be mindful to pray for the people of God to find true peace … peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. For God was pleased to have all His fullness dwell in Jesus, and through Him to reconcile to Himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through His blood, shed on the cross. (Colossians 1:19-20) Indeed, some of the dearest words our Savior ever spoke were these words: “My peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. (John 14:27) Yes, it is my prayer that Israel will come to faith in Jesus the Messiah … Yeshua Hamashiach.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.~ Philippians 4:6-7

Conformed…

Conformed…

And you will know that I am the Lord, for you have not followed my decrees or kept my laws but have conformed to the standards of the nations around you. ~ Ezekiel 11:12

To be conformed is to be in agreement or harmony … to be obedient or compliant … to act in accordance with prevailing standards or customs.  In the context of this verse, we see Israel under the discipline of God for living in accordance with the world … according to the prevailing customs of the surrounding nations. Paul admonishes believers regarding this same issue: “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—His good, pleasing and perfect will.” (Romans 12:2)

Likewise, John urges believers to renounce all desire for the world: “Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.” (1 John 2:15-17)

Why is conformity with the world such a concern for those who believe in Christ? Well, if we conform to the world, we in essence submit to its ruler – the prince of this world who is destined to be driven out. (John 12:31) Moreover, Jesus told His disciples: “If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.” (John 15:19) Yes, Jesus has made it clear that His followers are not of the world even as He is not of it. (John 17:16) As Jesus told Pontius Pilate, “My kingdom is not of this world….”

Oh, how we need to understand that friendship with the world means enmity toward God. Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. (James 4:4) Indeed, it is clear that God has predestined those He called out of the world to be conformed to the image of His Son! (Romans 8:29) For what we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us.

Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at His coming. As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do. ~ 1 Peter 1:13-15

Fullness…

Fullness…

For in Christ all the fullness of the Godhead lives in bodily form, and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority. ~ Colossians 2:9-10

When we first think about the word fullness, our thoughts probably linger on the state of having eaten enough and feeling full … the state of being filled to capacity. But think about this definition: the state of being complete or whole.  As I think about this word in biblical terms, I am persuaded to lean towards the idea of completeness or wholeness. Jesus is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of His Being. (Hebrews 1:3) He is both completely God and completely human. For God was please to have all His fullness dwell in Jesus. (Colossians 1:19)

In his Letter to the Ephesians, Paul captured this thought:

Ephesians 3:16-19 (NIV)

I pray that out of His glorious riches He may strengthen you with power through His Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

But let us not miss the context of this fullness to which we have been called:

Ephesians 1:22-23 (NIV)

And God placed all things under His feet and appointed Jesus to be head over everything for the Church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills everything in every way.

I believe that fullness should be understood in context of the Church, which is His Body. Though we are filled with His Spirit as individuals, fullness is achieved within the whole body of believers. It is the role of Church, and its members collectively, to complete the message and mission of Christ Jesus! He has sanctified and consecrated us for the good works which God prepared in advance for us to do. (Ephesians 2:10) Yes, in Christ we have been brought into fullness; but this fullness is realized as a community – each of us bringing our giftings and callings for the edification of all! For we are all members of His Body … which is the fullness and completion of Him.

For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. ~ Romans 12:3-5

Empty…

Empty…

He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. ~ Luke 1:53

Empty is a dreadful word. It conjures images of hollowness; voidness; a vessel containing nothing. Empty means not occupied or inhabited; lacking reality, substance, meaning, or value; having no purpose or result.  Empty describes how we were before our encounter with Jesus. We were lifeless and useless before He called and redeemed us. 

Empty is a necessary word. It is necessary … it is imperative for us to be emptied of ourselves before Jesus can fill us with His life-giving Spirit. We do not have the capacity to receive the fullness of God when we are full of ourselves. Instead, Jesus said: “Whoever wants to be my disciples must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it. (Luke 9:23-24)

Empty is a transforming word. It reflects the will of God to conform us to the image of His Son. Indeed, God transforms our emptiness! In the beginning, the earth was formless and empty. (Genesis 1:2) But then God filled His creation with everything necessary for life! Likewise, we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. (Ephesians 2:10) Yes, God chose us in Jesus before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in His sight. In love, He predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with His pleasure and will. (Ephesians 1:4-5)

My friends, it is my prayer that we who’ve been redeemed from the empty way of life through the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect, would endeavor to have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: “Who, being in the form of God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to His own advantage; rather, He emptied Himself by taking the form of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!” (Philippians 2:5-8)

As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my Word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it. ~ Isaiah 55:10

Abundant…

Abundant…

How abundant are the good things that You have stored up for those who fear You, that You bestow in the sight of all, on those who take refuge in You. (Psalm 31:19)

Abundant is a pleasant word…. It conveys thoughts of plentiful; great quantity; more than adequate; over-sufficient; lavish; well supplied. Indeed, God provides us with inexhaustible mercy … exceeding grace … infinite peace … lavish love … great hope … overwhelming joy! Yes, He abundantly supplies for every need according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus! (Philippians 4:19) And we have this assurance from our Lord Jesus who declared: “I have come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” (John 10:10)

Abundant is an encouraging word…. It resonates the gracious fullness with which our God delights to bless us in His Son. His plan … His purpose … His pleasure for us was predestined before the creation of the world:

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. For He chose us in Him (Jesus) before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in His sight. In love, He predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with His pleasure and will— to the praise of His glorious grace, which He has freely given us in the One He loves. In Him (Jesus) we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace that He lavished on us.

Abundant is a responsive word…. There is no end to what we should do in response to the incomparable riches of His grace expressed in His kindness to us in Christ Jesus. (Ephesians 2:7) We shall thank God continually.  We shall pray without ceasing.  Yes, through Jesus, let us offer to God an endless sacrifice of praise – the fruit of lips that openly profess His Name. (Hebrews 13:15) Our God and Father is worthy of the highest and unending worship! Hallelujah! How good it is to sing praises to our God, how pleasant and fitting to praise Him! (Psalm 147:1) Now unto the King Eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. (1 Timothy 1:17)

Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. All who have this hope in Him purify themselves, just as He is pure. ~ 1 John 3:1-3
